The History of The Junction

In the early 1900s, Ohakune Junction was established as part of the North Island Main Trunk Railway (NIMT), which connected Auckland and Wellington.

The railway reached Ohakune in 1908, making it a crucial transport hub for freight and passengers. During this time, the station was bustling with activity, featuring railway refreshment rooms and worker accommodations.

The arrival of the railway opened the region to the timber industry, with large sawmills operating in and around Ohakune.

The surrounding forests, rich in rimu, tōtara, and mataī, were logged and transported via rail. The population grew as workers and their families settled near the Junction.

With the rise of road transport in the mid-20th century, Ohakune Junction saw a decline in rail activity.

By the 1970s, the importance of the station had diminished, and many businesses that relied on railway passengers closed.

Today, Ohakune Junction is enjoying a resurgence, fuelled by tourism.

With its proximity to Tongariro National Park and Turoa Ski Field, many historic railway buildings have been repurposed into bars, restaurants, and lodges, creating a vibrant atmosphere while preserving its unique heritage.

Ohakune Junction remains a gateway to adventure, blending history with modern attractions for visitors and locals alike.
